Hi, I’m Robbie Nolan from Summit Web in Perth. It’s that time of year again where we get to sit back and review this year’s marketing activities.

One of the great things about digital marketing is that it enables smaller brands to compete with bigger brands on the web, and speak to exactly the same audience that the bigger brands have had all to their own for too many years.

Let’s have a look at some of the things you can do to learn from your marketing activities this year.

One, review your marketing spend.

What did you allocate your marketing funds towards this year and what or why have you received from those efforts? Practise the 80/20 rule, also known as Pareto’s principle, where it’s likely that 80% of your outcomes will come from 20% of your efforts.

It’s likely that next year it will be a good idea to hone more in on those 20% activities and allocate more of your budget and your marketing spend towards those mediums.

It’s important to have a look at the time spent on various marketing activities throughout the year also.

What did you get the best return out of and what was most enjoyable for the team and productive for your business?

Your time is a finite resource.

It is very valuable so make sure that marketing isn’t just a distraction, but rather than something that’s delivering value for your business and your customers.

At this time of year, it can also be beneficial to plan your marketing strategy and budget for the coming year while the lessons of this year’s activities are still fresh in the mind.

How about reaching out to your clients or prospects or people you’ve met throughout the year that you’re looking to do business with, with a seasonal message?

Wish them the best of luck for their businesses for the new year ahead, and also for their families and friends and loved ones over the holiday period.

As part of your end-of-year review, you might consider reviewing the technology and tools that you’re using for your marketing efforts.

This could be anything from automation software such as email marketing automation. It could actually even be the website itself that your business is using. Is it time to update and upgrade?

Is your website attracting the right type of customers and then converting them into solid leads? What about innovation?

What are you going to do that sets your business apart from your competitors online next year?

How are you going to stand out from the crowd? Now’s a great time to plan ahead ways that you can get your message to more customers and generate more business than ever before.

Lastly, put next year’s marketing plan in place now so when your team comes back from the holidays, you can hit the ground running and get a head start on your competitors.
